An
"appraisal" is considered what the item in question is worth or it's
"current market value". Current market value
is not based necessarily on book values, hear say or auction prices. Auction
prices fluctuate based on the buyers present at each and every auction.
However, if a particular collectible sells at various auctions for nearly
the same price, this is a factor in determining "current market value".
The
other determining factors of an appraisal are based on reputable dealers
who have been involved in the market for a long period of time, several
years for example, attending many auctions, belonging to collectible clubs
and organizations, selling and trading collectibles and intermixing with
serious other collectors who actually determine what they or the consumer
are willing to pay for certain collectibles. Most of the time, book values
are obsolete by the time they get on theshelves. The majority of collectibles,
especially "high end" collectibles never go down in value.
When
a reproduction of a collectible is produced and hits the market, this is
actually a compliment to the original piece, thus further enhancing the
value of the original. Beware of reproductions. When in doubt, research
the item. If you are afraid of loosing the item when in doubt, ask the
seller if he would be willing to refund your money if you can prove the
item to actually be a reproduction, in a professional manner of course.
